is everyboby really having sex TODAY?
Is everybody really having sex today? Maybe you heard it from a friend, or from a movie, a random group conversation, or just a feeling you got scrolling your phone late at night. Wherever it came from, it did its job; it made you feel behind, as though you’re missing out on something everyone else is already doing.
There’s a belief you’ve probably heard so many times it started to feel like fact. It goes something like this: everyone your age is sexually active, you’re the odd one out, and waiting is just something people say but nobody actually does.
But what if that belief isn’t true?
Let’s look at the numbers
Here’s something that might surprise you.
According to the General Social Survey, the share of young adults aged 18-29 who reported having no sex in the past year doubled from 12% to 24% between 2010 and 2024, which is one in four young adults.
A 2022 Kinsey Institute survey found that one in four Gen Z adults had never had sex at all. Among men aged 18-24, 40% reported no sexual activity in the past year.
That’s not a small, weird minority.
Helloooo! That’s nearly half!
So the next time you’re in a room of other people your age and feel like you’re the only one who hasn’t had sex, statistically, you aren’t. You just can’t tell by looking.
Is Everybody Really Having Sex Today? Here’s Why It Feels That Way”
The gap between reality and perception is real. Part of it is media: movies, music, and social media run a constant highlight reel where everyone is perpetually meeting and sleeping with someone new. And annoyingly, they are being really loud about it.
But a bigger part is this: people exaggerate.
Not everyone is having sex! My friends and I aren’t for sure. The media has sold us the idea that it is the norm; and you either fall in line or you get sidelined. You think sex is cool? Try sexual purity. That is wayyy cooler.
The Fear of Being Left Behind
There’s a name for that tight feeling in your chest when you think everyone has something you don’t: FOMO. The fear of missing out.
This is also linked to CURIOSITY. Research on adolescent behavior has found that teens who believe “everyone is doing it” are more likely to become sexually active earlier, even when that belief is wrong. The perception creates the behavior; and the lie shapes the realMore often, peer pressure sounds like a persistent feeling that you’re falling behind. That you’re immature or out of touch. It feels like you must do what ‘you think’ others are doing to belong. Unfortunately, belonging built on that kind of pressure is fragile. It requires you to keep performing, exaggerating, and shrinking the part of yourself that has values and wants something different.
So Why Abstain from sex?
Let’s say the data is right and half the people around you aren’t having sex either. Does that automatically make abstinence the right call?
We’d say yes, but not because of the numbers.
At Lustnfree, we’re not asking you to abstain because “nobody’s really doing it anyway.” We’re asking you to think about what sex is actually for, and what you lose when you treat it like something casual. Sex was designed for covenant; for a level of knowing and being known that belongs inside a committed relationship called marriage. When it’s disconnected from that, it often brings confusion, attachment without commitment, and shame, for you and for the other person.
The culture that tells you everyone is having sex also doesn’t mention the regret. Research published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior found that regret after casual sex was common, present across both men and women, often more than expected. The hookup doesn’t always feel the way the movies said it would.
Sexual purity isn’t a punishment. It’s a protection. It keeps you whole for the relationship you actually want.
You’re not missing out. You’re holding out for something better. If that season feels lonely or hard, we’d love to walk with you.
That’s what we’re here for.
